The vision began in 2021.

Ed. Opal’s mission is to create greater equity in the world by delivering culturally relevant personal finance education to groups that the personal finance industry has historically overlooked.

Hi. I’m Khayla (bottom right) and I’m excited to tell you why I’m building Ed. Opal.

In 2021, I gathered myself and my group of friends together to help one another figure out our money. We’d all become overwhelmed and disenchanted with the personal finance industry, but we all had the same core questions.

  • Am I making the right choices with my money to ensure that me and my family will be ok now and in the future?

  • What options do I have for my money and how do I stay up-to-date on those options?

  • There are a lot of trends out there. How do I read between the lines and make sure I’m not getting suckered, but also ensure I’m not losing out on opportunities due to a lack of knowledge or fear?

THIS WAS JUST THE BEGINNING

I wanted to do my part in helping to answer these questions. I’m not a personal finance professional, so I leaned into my network to find highly experienced professionals who were used to working with non-traditional situations. I created a live, small cohort-based learning program to ease the feelings of loneliness and shame that sometimes come with exploring personal finance topics. By the end of the first year, program participants walked away with their financial team of vetted professionals whom they trusted, who understood their unique circumstances, and in many cases, looked like them.

Over the past three years, the program has grown and evolved. I’ve seen its impact, and now believe it’s time to scale my efforts to support more women like us. I’m still researching and building. The best way to ensure I build the right products and tools is by talking to folks like you. If you’d like to chat with me for 15 minutes about how I can help support you, schedule a Customer Discovery interview with me. Based on prior feedback, we’ve launched educational courses focused on topics across areas we know heavily impact women, and Black women in particular. Feel free to join us in one of our upcoming courses! We’d love to have you. Looking forward to building together.
